Hunger in New York City, and How You Can Help

This is the fourth in a series of posts designed to raise awareness of the challenges of hunger and poverty  in specific communities, and the work of food banks to address those challenges.

According to new research by the Food Bank For New York City, the number of New York City residents struggling to afford food has doubled  to 4 million since 2003. Recent Food Bank research also shows that 20 percent of New Yorkers report they would not be able to afford food immediately after losing their household income.

Meanwhile, the Food Bank has been experiencing food shortages for much of the past year, and food prices and unemployment continue to rise. It is astounding that in one of the world’s richest cities, so many people would have trouble affording one of life’s basic necessities. That is why Tyson Foods is stepping up to make a difference.

For every comment made to this blog posting, Tyson will donate 100 lbs of food (up to a 35,000-pound truckload) to the Food Bank For New York City. That means that we need 350 comments right here to help provide food for struggling New Yorkers. As in similar efforts we've had here in the past few months, short comments are acceptable, and we won't harvest your email addresses to use later.  Comments are moderated, so it might take a bit to get them posted.

As the major hunger-relief organization for New York City, the Food Bank works to end food poverty and increase access to affordable, nutritious food for low-income New Yorkers throughout New York’s five boroughs. In addition to acquiring and distributing food to a citywide network of more than 1,000 food assistance programs, the Food Bank provides Direct Service, Education & Nutrition, Financial Empowerment and Disaster Relief Programs.

Continue to read below for more information about hunger and food poverty in New York City – and don’t forget to post your comment!

• Approximately 4 million New York City residents struggle to afford food for themselves and their families. Of that number, approximately half report they have never turned to food assistance before but worry that they may need to in the coming year.
• Close to half of all seniors living in New York City (47 percent) experience difficulty affording food
• 56 percent of households with children in NYC report difficulty affording food
• Close to one quarter (24 percent) of women in NYC report that they would not be able to afford food immediately after losing household income
• The average income for NYC households accessing emergency food that have employed members is $1,507 per month
• Almost one-third (31 percent) of disabled adults in NYC live below the federal poverty level (approximately $16,000 per year for a family of three)

The line at my local soup kitchen gets longer and longer every day. I make an effort to chat with those on the line while I walk past on my way to work. Many remark on how difficult it is to afford food. They sigh in relief as the Food Bank for NYC 18 wheeler rolls up and begins unloading food.

Thank you for providing for the hungry. Its a chronic issue in today's society and one that many of us try to avoid thinking it would never happen to me and that its their fault. But the way the economy is going, many Americans may have to depend on services like Food Banks to get through their work weeks.

Thank you so much for your help and dedication.

I'm not a New Yorker, but no city is any different than the described situation. Costs in any city are escalating out of control and it is understandable that people are living hand to mouth in NYC.

I once saw a B&W commercial which portrayed the poverty on the streets of NYC. The music, "New York, New York." Remember, it's up to you.

New Yorkers are meeting working families looking for pantries and soup kitchens open after-hours and on the weekends. Many are unaware that the resources exist and most are embarassed to ask. Thank you for supporting the Food Bank For New York City in helping emergency food providers supply food for those in need.

Thank you for donating this food.  There has been a huge increase at the food pantry we operate in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. So far, we have been very fortunate to keep up with the demand, but it is a day-by-day situation.  The food arrives, we give it out, we pray we can get some more food in time for the next pantry day.  Your gift to the Food Bank will go a long way toward helping pantries like ours continue to feed hungry New Yorkers.

We all have to help where we can--thanks to Tyson for chipping in where they can. Its a call to everyone--retailers (WALMART hello??), big food producers, governments--to make sure that we can feed our citizens.

For the new administration, its time to think about sustainable food policies--local food, more domestic production, not just of corn (which is increasingly diverted to cash crop ethanol) and wheat. Fresh food should be CHEAPER than processed food, not more expensive... and people need to look at their eating habits and develop long term sustainable, healthy, habits...

Dear Tyson and Food Bank people:

With so much hunger as a regular part of life for so many New Yorkers each day,  there is an unprecedented  need for action.  Both of your organizations deserve great thanks for all that you are doing to help ease the plight of hungry New Yorkers!

Thanks, Tyson! I regularly support the Food Bank for New York City, and people need help more now than ever. I do wish more folks knew how to prepare healthful, tasty, and inexpensive food for themselves at home. Start with a bag of beans, some onions and garlic, a bit of tomato paste or canned tomato sauce, a dash or two of vinegar, and some dried herbs like oregano or thyme, to make a wonderful, filling, cheap dish. Some people don't like to eat beans because of the, ahem, side effects, but I find it helps if you do the quick-soak method (boiling) rather than soaking overnight. Boiling for the recommended time, soaking, then draining and using fresh water to cook the beans removes more of the substances that produce gas.
